LEATHER PROCESSING

All our leather products are made of natural cowhide, sourced from Tuscan tanneries, vegetable-tanned in neutral shades in an antique style.

The skin

The leather is entirely Tuscan and the type of coloring gives each item the traditional "lived-in" look, while the special treatment, the result of our grandparents' secrets, provides additional protection against humidity and dust.

Each piece is cut and sewn by hand: in fact, the items have slightly different sizes and shapes from one another, guaranteeing the uniqueness of each one. To sew, we use a dark waxed cord, highly resistant and beautiful to look at.

The Press in the Spotlight

For the creation of the impressed images we use anancient fire press from the 1800s, inherited from our grandparents, which allows us to create more or less pronounced pressings depending on the product and the style we want to achieve. It is a large machine, a press with a bronze mold inside, which is heated to a specific temperature and allows us to "burn" the surface of the leather, with varying heat and pressure depending on the type and thickness of the material. The image thus appears in "bas-relief", that is, with fascinating variants of three-dimensionality perceptible both to the eye and to the touch.

The Bronzes of the Press

The bronzes were purchased by our grandparents about 60 years ago at an auction and since then they still work with great results.

The three most used with which we create the outer covers of soft and hard books are the "Lily of Florence", the "Farandole Dance" and the "Baccus" by Michelangelo. With them we create Books, Notebooks, Covers, Cases for pens and instruments, the Angels Box and the interiors of the Graphite Box.

With those from the small Classic Florentine Lily we create the leather patches found inside the Soft Notebooks and Hard Notebooks, those on their spines, and those on the lid of the Graphite Box.

With the Miniature Lily we make all the hard spines and the patches placed on the pencils of the Michelangelo Sketch-books.

We have also created new small bronzes, customized molds with which we make the decorations on the spines of Leather Herbarium, Paper Herbarium and Tarot Cards.
